Hasan Süzer Ethnographical Museum

 

The museum is a traditional Antep house in Bey neighbourhood Hanifioğlu street. It is the best place to see the old city of Antep with narrow streets, carved stone walls and old style roofs. The museum building was built at the beginning of the last century. The building was donated to Ministry of Culture and Tourism as Hasan Süzer Ethnographical Museum and organized as a mansion- museum style.

 

The traditional house life of Gaziantep residents of old times and ethnographical structure are exhibited with mannequins. The building was constructed in the traditional Antep house style, with three floors built on a top of a cellar carved in to the bedrock. It has three doors, two of them are on the main street, one is on a small street. You can walk in to the central garden called ‘hayat’ through the big carved door on the main street and to the ‘selamlık’ the men’s room, through the small door.

 

The ground floor displays a typical ‘working room’ dotted with human figures that are spinning wheel and tambouring ‘tandır (ovenlike a large earthen jar buried in the wall) room’ used for getting warm by the household in winters.

 

The bath is on the right of the stairs up to the first floor. In the bath, traditional bath equipments are also exhibited.
