ARABAN

         ARABAN DISTRICT
         Araban, got its name from Araban lowland and in the center of it, is in the northeast of Gaziantep, on the road of Gaziantep-Besni-Adıyaman, 67 kms to the city center. The area of Araban is 542 square kilometers and the altitude is 700 m. It is surrounded by Karadağ and Yavuzeli in the south, Halfeti and Bozova districts of Şanlıurfa in the north and Pazarcık district of Kahramanmaraş in the west. According to the address-based population registration system of 2012, the total population of the city is 32.091, and the population of the city center is 10.063. There is the Araban castle like a tumulus in the town center and Araban’s history dates back to B.C 2000. Due to moseleums in Elif, Hisar and Hasanoğlu villages and ruins in the town center, it was once under the control of Sassanid, Urart and Rome Empire. The name of it was ARAT in old ages. Araban a town called Altıntaş in the republic period, was formed a district in 1957. Araban castle, moseleums with stone carvings in Elif, Hisar and Hasanoğlu villages, Septimus Severus Bridge over Karasu stream and tomb of Said-i Ebu Vakkas are historical, touristic and religious places in Araban. The economy depends on agriculture and stock raising . Watermelon , cotton,wheat, barley, lentil, chicpea, grape and pistachio are important agriculture products.
